No one likes to be involved in a traffic accident, but they happen very often. The best thing you can do is to protect yourself as much as possible from any financial or at-fault hardship. Obviously, if you're seriously injured that's your first priority. For those who are not, however, taking notes is very important. Write down everything you can: the time of day, the weather, what you heard anyone say about the accident, who witnessed it, and everything else that had anything to do with it, including where you were going, etc. These things may seem trivial, but they really aren't.
They can be very important later on. The same is also true of any injuries you sustained (visible or not) so that you have that information for court, a report you must file with law enforcement, or anything else – like the other party's insurance company. Make sure you include everything, or it can be difficult to claim later. Some of the most common causes of accidents include not paying attention, speeding, and not being aware of who has the right-of-way. All of these and more issues can cause accidents, and some are much more serious than others. Regardless of what caused the accident, you should know the reporting laws in your state. If the police are called, they will take the report. However, not all accidents involve the police. For those that do not, you must report them to the DMV in
your state or report them to law enforcement (the rules can vary by state), and your insurance company will probably want to know about it, as well. It's better to call too many people and have too much information than to not do enough and get in trouble for it later. Know the laws in your state and follow them. That will save you from problems later.
